Margaret C. WALTERS - 1837-1918, Tennessee to Illinois

 Another RICE ancestor in our LEWIS-RICE family, here is Margaret C. WALTERS, 5th daughter and youngest child of Anderson WALTERS & Elizabeth JOYNER. 

Margaret's 6 siblings were all born in Sumner County, Tennessee, but shortly after 1837 the family migrated westward and settled in  the southeast portion of Illinois, to White County. The Township for this region is Indian Creek.

On December 1855, Margaret C WALTERS married Phillip Wesley VINEYARD [1834-1874] in Carmi, White, Illinois, the county seat of White County. See photo of the Courthouse on the right (public domain).

Margaret's husband Phillip W. VINEYARD died unexpectedly, aged 40, on 6 Feb 1874 in Indian Creek, White county, IL, leaving her with 7 children, aged 17 to 3 yrs of age. His estate took some time to settle, with debt claims to settle, Margaret's dower portion to settle, and the land and property to sell. His probate papers detail these issues, and may easily be found on FamilySearch.org.  Note that Phillip's father died scarcely 2 years earlier. 

Several years later, in 1878, Margaret married for a second time to a widower with a number of children, Francis Marion Berry. Two boys were delivered of this second marriage:

Margaret's second husband, Francis, died in 1914, aged 80 yrs.  Margaret moved to be with one of her children - her daughters were living with their families in Salina County. She  died 12 Feb 1918 in Buelah Heights, Salina co., IL. She was aged 81 years old. She is buried with her second husband in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, in McLeansboro, Hamilton county, IL.  

Margaret C WALTERS is the great-grandmother to brothers Jack & Bill Lewis, the 2nd-great-grandmother to their children, and 3rd-great-grandmother to the following generation. I have not been able to find any photos of Margaret. As she died in 1918, I might assume there are photos somewhere in the extended family. Hopefully we will find several eventually.

This week's #52ancestors: Anderson WALTERS 1794-1863

This week's post, in the year-long challenge by genealogist Amy J. Crow, is in the LEWIS-RICE line: Anderson WALTERS, the second great-grandfather to my children's father, their third great-grandfather.

Anderson WALTERS was born 10 May 1794 in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, the eldest child of parents, Archibald "Archer" WALTERS and Edyth "Edy" SLAYTON. According to death records, his father Archer lived to 100 years of age.

In 1815 in Sumner county, Tennessee, Anderson married Elizabeth JOYNER, the eldest child of Whitehead JOYNER and Lucy TAYLOR. The families lived close by, and I was able to find that Elizabeth's younger sister Lucy Walters married Thomas Joyner in about 1830. The young Walters family moved to Tennessee soon after they married.

All their children were apparently born in Sumner county, Tennessee, although I have seen a few Ancestry trees stating Montgomery county as their birthplace. I have not yet researched all the children's details. The family moved to White county in the south east corner of Illinois in the mid 1830s. Note that Illinois achieved statehood in 1818.

   4.  Elizabeth, b. 1828
   5.  Albert, b. 16 Sep 1834; m. 28 Nov 1860 in IL to Margaret Riley; 6 children
   6.  Margaret [ancestor], b. 1836, d. 1918 in IL; m. 13 Dec 1855 in IL to Phillip Wesley VINEYARD; 10 children.
   7.  Mary Ann "Polly", b. 1837, d. after 1900 in IL; m. Benjamin F. Morris; 13 children.

Anderson WALTERS served in the 7th Regiment of Virginia Militia, in the War of 1812. I also found that his brother Asa served in the 5th Regiment, and his brother Archibald served in the 4th Regiment.

By 1840, the Walters family were living in White county, IL, on 200 acres in Township 6 S Range 8E.  The 1850 Census taken October 18th, 1850, shows that Elizabeth JOYNER's brother Thomas and his family were farming next to them. Most of the Walter's children had married by this time, and living at home were only Albert and Margaret. Two young Yates boys also were listed as living with them on this census. On the previous Illinois census, there were seen several Yates families nearby them, and I wonder if there is a possible family connection with the surname Yates.

Illinois took a State Census in 1855, and Anderson is listed in the section labelled Township 6 S Range 8E.

On 26 Oct 1852, Elizabeth died, aged 57 years of age.  Two years later, Anderson married Mrs. Christena Shaw on 16 Sep 1854, in Hamilton County IL. This county is directly west of White county. There were no children of this second marriage. In the 1860 Census for Township 6 S Range 8E, only Anderson and Christena are listed together. He states his real estate holdings as worth $1600, with personal value of $725.

Anderson WALTERS died aged 68 years, on 30 Apr 1863, and was buried on private property in White County Illinois. Apparently the stones of Anderson and wife [Elizabeth?] can be seen from the road, County road #025E, just north of County road #500N.

His probate list showed a distribution, after payment of all claims, to widow and heirs, with funds distributed to them.  Likely land and other items would already have been passed on and distributed.

I love probates and wills: Here we see a number of Anderson WALTERS' children listed, with the daughters' married surnames as well. The Executors were daughter Margaret's husband, Phillip Wesley VINEYARD and Anderson WALTERS 2nd son, Albert Walters.

Because of the way the listing is shown, with equal specific amounts to each child, with one-third to his second wife, I am assuming that there was no will at the time of his death. I will certainly go looking again, to be more certain.

52 ANCESTORS in 52 WEEKS, No. 48: Edyth "Edy" SLAYTON, b. abt 1793 VA

Following the challenge from Amy Johnson Crow to write a post weekly, 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks, here is my 48th installment, Edyth "Edy" SLAYTON, b. abt 1776 in Tennessee.  Edy is the 3rd great-grandmother of my ex-husband, the 4th great-grandmother of our children.  I am continuing to write about the ancestors whom I know little about, to remind myself to do more research on them. Some of them had minimal research done when I first began searching out my family tree, before I began to learn about using good genealogical standards. 

Edy is the daughter of Daniel Henry SLAYTON & Ann "Millie" WALLER, and she appears to have been born in Tennessee in approximately 1775. I have very little information on other siblings, and very little on her parents.  It doesn't help that there were at least 3 Daniel Slayden/Slayton men living nearby. This surname is written many ways: Slayton, Slayden, Sladden, and so on.

On 18 Mar 1793 in Pittsylvania County Virginia, Edy married Archibald "Archer" WALTERS, son of Thomas WALTERS and Lucy WALKER [not yet proven]. There is much confusion about the existence of two Archer Walter men living in close proximity - one, several years older, was the uncle to the younger. This appears to be the younger Archibald.  He had been married earlier to Elizabeth Richards in 1788. They had 2 children; however in late 1791, Elizabeth died in childbirth of the 2nd child.  Children were Mary, and Abner (married, children).

Edy and Archer had 6 children:
  1.  Anderson, [ancestor], b. 10 May 1794, VA, d. 30 Apr1863 in White county, IL; m. 1815 in TN to Elizabeth JOYNER; 7 children
  2.  Asa, b. abt 1795, TN, d. 1868 IL
  3.  Daniel [named for Edy's father], b. abt 1799, TN,  d. 1856, IL
  4.  Thomas, b. abt 1801, TN, d. in White county, IL
  5.  Lucy, b. abt 1803, TN, d. 1875, IL
  6.  Martha, b. abt 1804, TN, d. 1840, IL 

As can be seen, the family settled in Tennessee (in Montgomery County) for perhaps a decade or two, before moving slightly further north to White County, Illinois.

Archer is said to have died about 1846 in Montgomery county, TN.  It is confusing to hear he died in Tennessee when he seems to have settled in Illinois by about 1835?  Perhaps he was living with an adult child, perhaps after his wife died?  

At this point, I have been unable to find any records about where or when Edy died.

52 ANCESTORS in 52 WEEKS, #9 : Whitehead JOYNER

Following the challenge of writing 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks, issued by Amy Johnson Crow, here is my 9th installment, for Whitehead JOYNER, my children's 4th great-grandfather, on their father's mother's line.

Although I haven't done much research on Whitehead, I'm including him in this challenge, to remind myself of the many details I need to search for.  Plus, I simply love his name.  When I found his first name listed as the father on a daughter's marriage, I had to smile and say "Yeah - another surname to search for!"  

Whitehead was born 17 Jun 1765, in Sumner county, Tennessee, the second child/second son of Matthew JOYNER and Mary WHITEHEAD. His parents married about 1762 in Edgecumbe NC.  However, it could be that he and all the children were born in North Carolina where both parents are said to be born - in Edgecumbe [Edgecomb?] or Wake county or Northampton county.  There are confusing stories about the places where the first Joyner families lived.  Mary Whitehead died about 1773, leaving 3 boys and a daughter; Matthew married before 1777 to Lydia Griffis/Griffiths and had 9 more children [2 boys, 7 girls]. 

On 27 Jun 1793, in Sumner county Tennessee, Whitehead married Lucy TAYLOR, daughter of Robert TAYLOR and Nancy HERRING, from North Carolina. The Taylor family had moved to Sumner county Tennessee from North Carollina.  

Whitehead & Lucy had 7 living children that I've been able to find, all born apparently in Sumner county, TN:
 - Elizabeth*[direct ancestor], b. 1 Jun 1795, m. abt 1815 to Anderson WALTERS, 7 children
 - Benjamin, b. 16 Oct 1798
 - Thomas, b. 12 Dec 1802, m. bef 1832 to Lucy , 8 children
 - Margaret, b. abt 1804
 - Lucy, b. abt 1806
 - Martha, b. 7 Apr 1807
 - Nancy, b. abt 1808

These first names are common in both the Taylor and Joyner families. I have not done research on the girls as yet.  And, I have not been able to go back further from Whitehead's father, Matthew, in North Carolina.

It is possible these families all knew each other, and I need to dig through more Censuses and documents to see if there's a prior connection in North Carolina: family, associates, neighbours, land records, bonds, military and other records. I've scarcely scratched the surface.

I have just realized that Sumner county was originally in North Carolina and was ceded to the new state of Tennessee when that state was created in 1796.  This makes much more sense to me, now.  Oh, what a little research will do, eh?!
