Mary OLIN 1809-1872, Canton NY to Norris ILL

After a rather long hiatus from blogging, here is Mary OLIN, born in NY state, married, had 7 children, and died in Norris city in Illinois. Mary is in the RICE line of my children's father's mother, and is their 3rd great-grandmother. I was caught by her surname, thinking it seemed a Scandinavian surname perhaps. The earliest OLIN ancestor I've found in the New England states is John OLIN born about 1675, who at about 14 left his ship at harbour in Rhode Island. He later married Susannah SPENCER, a daughter of one of the original Spencer brother immigrants. Some information came from a useful book titled:

"A Complete Record of the JOHN OLIN FAMILY, the first of that name who came to America in the year A.D. 1678. Containing an account of their settlement and genealogy up to the present time -- 1893. By C.C. OLIN, Historian."

Mary was the second child of Joseph Mitchell OLIN and his first wife, Huldah SMITH [d. 1831]. Joseph and Huldah had been living and married Dec 25, 1806 in Addison Vermont, but moved to Canton New York state shortly after, where their first child, Joseph, was born in 1807. All 11 children appear to have been born in Canton NY. 

In about 1828, Canton NY, Mary OLIN aged about 19 years, married 27 year old farmer, Calvin HEALY, [b.1801], another person whose family had moved from Vermont to northern New York in very early 1800s. Calvin's parents were Jabez HEALY and Grace BAILY.

           m 1 Mar 1874 ILL to Sarah A Bryant; 9 children.

All eight children were born in White County ILL, likely settling in Norris City - actually a small village, currently under 1400 persons. I have no church details for this family; there are three existing churches at present. 

Mary OLIN died18 Aug 1872 aged 63 years in Norris, White Co., Ill, before her husband, Calvin. She is buried in the Rice Cemetery, in White Co., Ill.  She and Calvin had 8 living children, and in total, 58 grandchildren. However, as is usual, I have no particular personal information about Mary. Hopefully I might find more about her with more specific future research, eg., church records, newspapers, societies, and so on. 

Calvin HEALY, Mary's husband, died aged 80 years, 2 Mar 1881, in Sacramento, White Co., Ill, possibly living with one of his children or grandchildren. He is also buried in the Rice Cemetery, in White Co., Ill, his details on the other side of Mary's stone.

Abel RICE, 1792-1846, from MA to TN to IL

Abel RICE is my ex-husband's second great-grandfather, my children's third great-grandfather. The line goes from Abel to son Joel, to son Henry Luther to Reba to the Lewis brothers.

Abel RICE, born September 5, 1792 in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, was the eldest son of the 2nd wife of Ebenezer RICE, Ruth Henrietta EVELETH. They had married just over a year after Ebenezer's first wife, Sarah Taynter [Tainter] died, leaving 4 children. Ruth and Ebenezer had 5 more children. Abel as a first name was relatively common - I have found over a dozen born within 10 years of his birth year, in the United States.  The image here is of the Library in Hubbardston, MA. Note the coloured tiles on the angled roof.

Abel's older step-siblings were born in Princeton, then in Hubbardston, Worcester county, Massachusetts, where his parents and siblings seemed to stay until about 1800 when he was approximately 8 years of age. I have found one unsubstantiated [to date] family story stating that his father, Ebenezer RICE, seems to have been a circuit Minister or Missionary, and moved the family to Maury county, Tennessee, about 1,000 miles southeast. Ebenezer and Ruth stayed in Maury county, TN until he died in 1834, Ruth in 1831.

On October 11, 1815, Abel married Lydia GHOLSON, in Maury county, TN. Lydia's parents were Francis and Mary [CRAIG] GHOLSON; Lydia was the 6th of 10 children. Note that Tennessee was the 16th State, joining the Union in 1796. It seems as if both the RICE and GHOLSON families moved to Tennessee soon after Tennessee's statehood.

Although their first two children were born in Maury co., TN, Abel, Lydia, and their young family moved 180 miles north, up to the new territory of Illinois [southeast corner] by late 1818, where they remained. You can track their movements on Google maps: Hubbardston Massachusetts, to Maury Tennessee, finally to White county Illinois.

Eleven children and several moves into new territories. It seems quite challenging to me, but they clearly thought it well worth the moves. The married children tended to stay fairly close to their parents, as well, from what I have been able to research.

I was able to find several land purchase records by Abel RICE from 1824-1834, for land around Shawneetown in Galatin county, IL. To the right is the [Old] Courthouse in Shawneetown, photographer Russell Lee.

Abel seems to have been relatively prosperous in Illinois. Also, he is found as the County Commissioner for two terms: 1826-28, and 1843-45.

On Censuses, Abel and his family are found on the 1820 Census, with one boy (Tolliver) and 3 girls (Eliza, Hulda, Martha). On the 1830 Census, nine of the 11 children are shown, likely the other two are be out of the house, or the enumerator made an error - or whoever gave the information forgot a child or two!

On the 1840 Census, Tolliver is out out of the house, married. The rest of the children are apparently present, living at home.

At the age of only 53, Abel died on Feb 18, 1846, in McLeansboro, Hamilton, IL, where he and Lydia had moved a few years previously.

I was not able to find Lydia widowed, on an 1850 Census, after searching through all of the adult children and their spouses. It is possible that she was living with one of her siblings, as several of them also settled in Illinois.

Four years after Abel's death, his wife Lydia died on July 11, 1850, aged 58. I have not as yet found either Abel's will/probate, or Lydia's will/probate. I have found a probate index for Abel Rice, but I need to search/request a copy of Abel's actual will and/or probate.

52 ANCESTORS, 52 THEMES, No.31, Easy: Henry Luther RICE, 1857-1934

This year's challenge by Amy Crow is another weekly blog based on Themes. Last week's theme was Challenging, and I had another go at my 3rd great-grandmother, Charlotte BORTLE. This week's theme is EASY -  which turned out to be more challenging than last week's topic.  Here is Henry Luther RICE, my children's great-grandfather on their father's mother's line.

Henry may have been named for another Henry in the family, Henry C. Rice, born 1827, his uncle, his father Joel's brother. Uncle Henry married Arletta Healy, the sister of Joel's wife, Charlotte Healy.

Henry Luther RICE was the first-born of Joel RICE and Charlotte HEALY, who had married 19 Aug 1854 in White county, Illinois.  Born 26 July 1857 in Harrisburg, Salina, Illinois, Henry married for the 1st time to Ida May Barnes, 20 Apr 1881, in Illinois.  Ida, born 1862 in [likely] White county, Illinois, was the 3rd of 8 children of Theron Stares Barnes and Martha S. Mitchell.

Unfortunately, Ida May died 5 Jan 1887, barely a month after Joel was born, leaving Henry with 3 children under 5 years.  I have not yet found a marriage record, but by 1887, he married Martha Jane VINEYARD, the 6th of 10 [or 12] children of Phillip Wesley Vineyard & Margaret C. WALTERS. [The couple may have adopted 2 Yates children].  And after Phillip died in 1874, Margaret married for the second time to Francis M. Berry and had 3 more children.  Martha Jane was born 2 Aug 1864 in White county, Illinois; her family may have been neighbours with the Rice family, as both families were farming in Indian Creek region of White County, IL. Indian Creek is a village next to Norris City township in White County.

Henry and his family lived in the Indian Creek township area of White County, Illinois until just after the last child was born.  While in Illinois, he sold Farm Implements, according to the 1900 Census.

The family moved after 1905 to Redlands, San Bernardino, California where they may be seen on the 1910 Census.  All the children are listed as born in Illinois. Henry's occupation at this time is Printer, owning/managing his own Printing shop, where his son Barney was also working with him. The elder three children by his first wife are not at home at this time, which would be normal considering their ages in 1910.

Henry continued to work in his own printing shop, as seen in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses, with Barney assisting in the shop.  Henry died 12 Jan 1934 in Redlands, and is buried there at Hillside Memorial Cemetery.  His second wife, Martha Jane, died 19 Mar 1954 in Los Angeles, and is also buried in Hillside Memorial Cemetery.

52 ANCESTORS, 52 THEMES. No. 9, CLOSE TO HOME: The HEALY Sisters

This year's challenge by Amy Crow is another weekly blog, but based on Themes. Last week, it was GOOD DEEDS, which I found a challenge.  This week, the theme is Close to Home.  

The HEALY sisters who married two brothers... not an unusual pairing. I have several similar family pairings.  And they make sense, don't they?  Your families go to the same church, your families live nearby, help each other out, go to school together... There are so many reasons why it is logical to marry into the same families. Here are two sisters who married into my ex-husband's Rice family line.

Originally from Vermont, Calvin HEALY (1801-1881) and Mary OLIN (1809-1872) had 7 known children born in White County, Illinois.   Their near neighbours in the area of Indian Creek, were the RICE family, originally from Vermont and Kentucky states: Abel RICE (1792-1846) and Lydia GHOLSON (1792-1850).  

The RICE family had 11 children, 5 of them boys: Tolliver G. b. 1816, Eliza R. b. 1818, Hulda b. 1819, Martha b. 1820, Sarah M. b. 1821, Allan M. b. 1824, William Emerson b. 1826, Henry C. b 1827, Elizabeth I. b. 1829, Mary Ann b. 1830, Joel b. 1832.  

The HEALY family had 7 children, 3 of them girls: Arletta M. b. 1830, Charlotte L. b. 1835, George Calvin b. 1837, James H. b. 1840, Jerusha Ann b. 1844, Joseph M b. 1847, and Henry Gilbert b. 1849.  

As you can see, the children's ages overlapped.  I can imagine the younger Rice girls Elizabeth & Mary Ann visiting with the Healy girls nearby, maybe after school, and after chores.  Henry and Joel Rice likely hung out with George & James Rice. Picnics together.  Farming chores. Church socials. Their fathers probably did road work together when needed, talking together about their children, the future, standing around together after church. The girls put together their hope chest or dowry chest - a trunk of linens, embroidery and quilts, needed for when they got married. Sitting together in the winter, sewing, planning, dreaming.

Arletta M., the eldest HEALY, married Henry C. Rice on 30 Jan 1850, and had 4 children, 1 boy and 3 girls: Ezra Joel, Ophelia, Marion Janette, and Rutha Roseanna.  

Several years later, the 2nd Healy child, Charlotte L. married the youngest Rice boy, Joel RICE, on 19 Aug 1854.  They had 5 children:  Henry Luther (direct ancestor), Caroline O., Sarah A., Charles, and Mary N.  

Their eldest child, our direct ancestor, Henry Luther RICE, continued to live in Illinois, marrying two wives, with 11 children born.  Eventually he moved to California with his 2nd wife and all the children, where he died in 1934, in Redlands.
